Webstudio

Open-source advanced website builder deploying to Cloudflare

About

Webstudio is an open-source advanced visual development platform for designers, developers, and teams. Akin to Webflow but with a unique approach, Webstudio is focusing on high-performance, scalable frontends that go beyond marketing sites, the ability to connect to any headless CMS or database, design tokens instead of classes, privacy-focused operations in compliance with GDPR, and the full power of CSS in a visual tool.

How do they use Cloudflare?

The development team wanted to build an open-source alternative to Webflow, with an emphasis on using Cloudflare's Developer Platform to run storage, compute, and media solutions. Inside the website builder, users click "Publish," and their websites deploy to Cloudflare's robust infrastructure. The building experience is decoupled from the hosting, removing hosting lock-in.

Deploying projects to Cloudflare's high-performing infrastructure, including Workers and Edge Cache, offers end-users near-zero latency and often sub-second load times. The Cloudflare-native approach this website builder takes significantly improves user experiences compared to traditional web hosting.

Given that user websites have various image types and breakpoints, Webstudio built a fully responsive image solution utilizing Cloudflare Images to automatically resize and compress customers' images as they publish their projects. By combining R2 to store static files, images, and JS and using Workers KV as a dynamic cache tool, Webstudio is well suited for both static and dynamic websites. Support for portals and web apps is coming soon.

Projects are server-side rendered, enabling dynamic user experiences and capabilities such as connecting to any headless CMS – using Workers to fetch HTTP APIs – entirely configured in the website builder's UI.

Next, Webstudio plans to implement upcoming features, including versioning, real-time collaboration, and advanced interactions and animations using Durable Objects and Workers as the centerpiece. Future integrations also include adding Party Kit to offer a real-time experience comparable to Figma. The public-facing roadmap provides visibility into these features.

Why Cloudflare?

"From a modern design tool, you'd expect real-time collaborative features and would like to have resources as close to users as possible. Since betting on the Developer Platform architecture, Cloudflare has done more for us than any other vendor out there!"
